First Aid for Opioid Poisoning

The Opioid Harm Reduction (OHR) Project is addressing Canada’s opioid crisis, which continues to devastate families and communities. In 2021 alone, there were 7,560 opioid-related deaths in Canada (Health Canada), a tragic number that highlights the urgent need for action. This crisis has worsened since the onset of COVID-19, but with the right training and resources, lives can be saved.

The Canadian Red Cross Opioid Harm Reduction training equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to opioid poisoning emergencies. The program envisions a future where no one in Canada faces an opioid poisoning emergency without a trained person and a naloxone kit nearby. By spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting preparedness, many small actions can add up to significant life-saving outcomes.

In just one hour, participants aged 16 and older will learn:

  • How opioids and naloxone affect the body.
  • Steps to confidently respond to an opioid poisoning emergency, including administering intranasal and intramuscular naloxone.
  • Ways to reduce stigma surrounding opioid use and strategies for self-care.

Upon completion, participants will receive a Canadian Red Cross certificate, demonstrating their ability to make a difference in their communities. Together, we can build a safer and more compassionate Canada.

Psychological First Aid

In a world filled with constant challenges, Psychological First Aid (PFA) is your compass, guiding you to a place of strength and resilience. It all starts with caring for yourself—nurturing your thoughts, feelings, and emotions—so you can be a pillar of support for your loved ones when they face adversity.

Get training in Psychological First Aid and learn how to anticipate stress whenever possible and equip yourself with the skill set to practice self-care and to provide care for others during times of stress, crisis or trauma.

Your PFA Journey Starts with two courses: Self-Care and Caring for Others

Embark on a transformative journey with our two online trainings: Self-Care and Caring for Others. Complete both courses for a well-rounded approach to psychological first aid and wellness.

A unique approach: Unlike mental health first aid, which trains people to help someone during a mental health emergency, Red Cross Psychological First Aid teaches you how to build resiliency to stress and establish coping strategies.

Psychological First Aid – Self Care

The Psychological First Aid (PFA): Self-Care course offers valuable tools to help individuals navigate stress and prioritize mental well-being. Through self-paced online modules, participants explore stress management, self-awareness, and strategies for building resilience. Designed for anyone aged 14 and older, the course is ideal for professional responders, workplace teams, and youth (with adult support for younger learners).

Participants will learn:

  • Types of stress, their triggers, and how to identify signs.
  • The importance of introspection and personal protective factors.
  • How to design a personalized self-care plan using the “Look, Listen, Link, Live” cycle.
  • Ways to leverage support systems effectively.

This 90-minute course complements the Caring for Others course, offering a comprehensive approach to Psychological First Aid.
